CHAPTER XI

The past returns

LEONA

“You can’t fool me, Miss Ignat,” Armando says quietly from behind her as they head up the narrow stairs from the underground garage to the Sanctuary. “You’re walking like a duck, and you know what?” He leans in over her shoulder. “You smell strongly of him, too.”

“Of course I do, Armando,” Leona says through her teeth. “I’m wearing his shirt.” She increases pace to put distance between them and maybe determine him to shut up. There’s a line of Upgrades leading them, another line trailing, and they have darn good hearing.

She walks briskly, increasingly aware of her duck-like swaying and the delicious sore sensation between her legs.

Entering the main hall, the men line up, while Leona and Armando are being brought to a halt by the same Upgrade who’s been basically shepherding them since the Old Casino.

Leona remembers this big hall—the piano room, how Alice liked to call it. The place seems abandoned, with cobwebs stretching over the piano’s corners like a veil, and the antique lamps crackling like old torches that have been awakened after felt centuries. There are a few people here, surely the ministers the Upgrade mentioned at the Old Casino, and their small retinues. Ghostly curtains ripple in the sea breeze that seeps through the weakened window joints, and the chilly, wet air slithers under the quilt that Leona is now wearing around her shoulders again, touching her naked skin and making it pebble.

Nathaniel has gotten here before them, and now he’s standing with his huge, broad back at Leona and facing the piano, hands on it, head down. He’s wearing a new black shirt hugging his muscular back that seems to be made of boulders. Every time she sees him, Leona can’t help but gasp at how big he is, so much bigger than everyone in the room, and yet how aesthetically pleasant to look at.

“Viscount,” a familiar voice booms from the side. Leona turns her head, searching for the source and, when her eyes fall on Damian “The Executioner” Novac walking in from the library, her heart jumps. Without thinking, she takes a step forward.

“Is Alice here, too?” Her voice clangs around the room, to all the present Upgrades’ gasping consternation. What, she wasn’t supposed to speak? All heads have turned to her, all except the Viscount’s, whose dark shape remains still, framed by the ghostly curtains rippling softly in the wind.

“She’ll be here shortly,” the Executioner replies. Still, his beastly eyes make it clear she is to hold her tongue from this point on. His raven hair falling in barbarian locks to his shoulders, his ferocious, chiseled features and his powerful frame make him second only to the Viscount in magnificence, and Leona is speechless for a few good moments. She expects that, by now, Alice has become a full Upgrade too, so she readies herself inwardly for an effect just as striking. Her heart starts hammering in anticipation—she’ll finally see her best friend again, after all these years. The
